What is BHRT?
An individualized approach to hormone replacement therapy, using biologically identical hormones (BHRT) pinpoints a person’s exact hormone levels and what hormones are needed to balance their hormone deficiency. The differences between synthetic and biologically identical hormones are in their chemical structures and functionality. Biologically identical hormones are plant-based compounds that have the same chemical structure as the hormones created naturally in the human body.
What is a pellet?
The estrogen, testosterone and other hormones used in BHRT come from natural plant sources—yam. They exactly match human hormones. Synthetic pharmaceutical hormones do not. Harmonié hormone replacement therapy uses bioidentical pellet implants to restore estradiol and testosterone to healthful levels. The hormones are pressed into very small pellets the size of a grain of rice.
What is the procedure like?
When the body is in need of estrogen or testosterone, tiny pellets placed under the skin consistently releases small doses of hormones. Pellet insertion is a relatively simple in-office procedure done under local anesthesia. The pellets are inserted under the skin in the upper buttocks/hip area through a tiny incision. The incision is then closed with surgical glue or sterile-tape strips. Patients cannot feel the implants under their skin. Once inserted, a steady, low dose of natural hormone flows directly into the blood stream whenever the body needs it. The body can then control the release of the hormone.
How long do my BHRT pellets last?
Every individual’s body chemistry is unique. Typically, we administer pellets every 4 to 6 months, depending on how rapidly the hormones are metabolized. The pellets do not need to be removed. They are completely dissolved by the body.
When does it start working?
Most patients report that it takes anywhere from 24 to 72 hours from the time of insertion.
Are there any side-effects?
Generally, there are minimal side-effects associated with the pellet implant procedure. Complications include: minor bleeding, bruising, infection, and pellet extrusion. Other than slight bruising, the other complications are very rare. Hormone side-effects vary and should be discussed with your healthcare practitioner.
