Are You The One In Ten? By Dana Humes Goff, APRN, CNM, DNP

Did you know that it is estimated that 10% of women may be affected with polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), but are undiagnosed? PCOS is a hormonal disorder common among women who have infrequent, absent, or prolonged menstrual periods; excess facial or body hair; and excessive weight gain.

The exact cause of PCOS is unknown. Early diagnosis and treatment, along with weight loss, may reduce the risk of long term complications related to PCOS, such a type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and infertility.

In addition to those mentioned above, other complications to PCOS include miscarriage or premature birth; liver inflammation caused by fat accumulation; metabolic syndrome; sleep apnea; abnormal uterine bleeding; endometrial cancer; and obesity.

To diagnose PCOS, your health care provider will analyze your blood to measure hormone levels, glucose, cholesterol and triglycerides, and insulin levels. A pelvic sonogram will also allow for evaluation of the uterine lining and ovaries.

Once diagnosed, treatment for PCOS includes lifestyle changes with a healthy diet and exercise since even a modest reduction of body weight can improve the condition. A dietary consultation with a registered dietitian can help your nutritional status and provide helpful strategies, as well as, suggest food sensitivity testing, which can help you achieve lifestyle goals.

Other treatment options include low dose birth control pills or cycling on a natural progesterone to achieve a hormone balance and regulate menses. If glucose or insulin levels indicate cell resistance to insulin, an oral medication such as metformin can help to avoid type 2 diabetes and help with weight loss.

Other medications such as spironolactone and Vaniqa can help with the effects of excessive androgen on facial hair growth. Laser hair removal and other procedures to remove unwanted facial and body hair are also options.

You can help to decrease the effects of PCOS by maintaining a healthy weight, limiting simple carbohydrates, which can increase your insulin levels, and being active.

So, if you or a loved one feel you may have symptoms of PCOS, please contact your health care provider or come and see us at the Couri Center so we can identify and develop an individualized plan of care for to live your best life.

2018: Creating a Lifestyle You can Live With By Leslie Rusch Bayer, RD, LDN, CPT

With the start of a new year, resolutions are often highlighted and pushed by gyms, exercise apparel companies and weight loss companies. Advertisements promote guaranteed weight loss, as well as how you can discover the perfect swimsuit body and fit into your smallest jean size yet. These companies promise they have the plan that will work for you, as well as every other person, but never does. We often give up and do anything, but often forget the impact these choices have on our own health along the way. Will you appreciate losing thirty pounds if you immediately gain forty pounds as soon as you are off “their” plan? How much money are you willing to spend on shakes, soups and bars that do not provide the results promised? When frustration hits and thoughts of hopelessness and desperation cross your mind, I encourage you to reassure yourself that there is hope, and rethink your strategy.

Imagine if, instead of focusing on weight loss, we all focused on improving health; and not just not being sick, but truly trying to understand how we as individuals can feel and function better. Get rid of calorie counting and restrictions. Eliminate counting carbs. Stop listening to the people telling you that the potatoes or bananas you are eating are making you fat. Instead of looking for what not to do, let’s begin to discover what you CAN do to feel better, improve metabolism and discover a healthier perspective – long term.

The Couri Center specializes in something unique: YOU! We want to teach you what your body requires and how to thrive. Dr. Couri has helped countless women answer the question of why. Why can’t I lose weight? Why do I have high cholesterol? Why do I feel bloated and sick after I eat? Why don’t I have energy? This year, instead of reaching for the latest gimmick or fad, let us help teach you about your own unique self.

The Couri Center offers an array of customized programs designed to uncover your current health status, so we can then create your custom blueprint for improving and optimizing how you feel. Whether you are trying to lose weight, eliminate medication and disease or balance hormones, we understand, and specialize in YOU.

A current patient who is a busy, business-owning, 52-year-old female wanted to share her recent testimony of Dr. Couri’s TLC: Total Lifestyle by Couri journey.

  1. What symptoms were you experiencing before beginning the TLC program?

I was experiencing fatigue, brain fog, achy joints, asthma, rosacea, high blood pressure with a diabetes diagnosis        looming. I also struggled losing weight.

  1. What interested you the most about the TLC program?

It is a closely monitored program that was customized for me based on my results from blood tests.

  1. How was your health prior to beginning the program? What did you learn from your blood work?

I had a very high level of inflammation. I was also showing elevated markers of heart disease and diabetes. I learned I am gluten intolerant, and have sensitivities to egg and dairy.

  1. How does TLC differ from other diets and programs you have tried in the past?

The TLC program is science-based and completely customized to me.

  1. How have the nutritional changes and recommendations impacted how you are eating/shopping/thinking about food?

The TLC program teaches a lifestyle, not a diet. I had to completely change my dietary thoughts. The support I received during and after the program have changed how I look and feel at food, eating and exercising. I enjoy food; I don’t see it as “bad.” Now it is MY lifestyle.

  1. Is the program hard?

Because the program is customized and so much support is given, is not hard at all.

  1. Which symptoms have you noticed improvement? Did your labs improve?

I now have normal blood sugar. I have no sign of diabetes. I cut my blood pressure medication in half and the brain fog has subsided. My joints do not ache and I have not used an inhaler for asthma since I started the program. I lost 37 pounds and I am still losing weight. ALL of my labs have improved. My primary care doctor is amazed!

  1. What did the TLC program teach you?

I have learned to plan meals based on my own blueprint and I eat more purposefully. I have found an exercise routine that fits my style and schedule.

  1. If you had not completed the TLC program, where do you think your health would be today?

My health would have continued to go downhill. I am sure I would be taking more medication and feeling terrible.

  1. If you could recommend TLC to a friend, what would you say?

The TLC program works! It is customized and unique to you because it is based on your labs. The support you receive is excellent.

  1. What is your outlook on your health now?

I feel 10 years younger. I don’t have fatigue and brain fog. I take less medication. I have also discovered a lot of new foods that I love!

  1. What are you recommendations to those who are thinking about trying TLC?

I highly recommend TLC-IT WORKS!

Can you relate to this story? Have you tried to explain your symptoms and feel as though “no one understands”? Are you tired of being sick and tired? Let us help. I encourage you to attend our Lifestyle Soiree on January 11. We will spend the evening discussing the impact our science-based, integrative programs have had on women-just like you. Let this be the year you finally understand your body better than you ever have. Expect a casual and comfortable setting.
