Did you Know? Couri Girl Fact: Sexual Dysfunction

Sexual health is an important component of women’s health, spanning the decades from our reproductive years through menopause and beyond. Sexual activity, behaviors, and sex-related problems of over 3000 U.S. adults 57 to 85 years of age have been investigated, and it has been found that the majority of older adults engage in intimate relationships and regard sexuality as an essential part of life. However, 43% of women of all ages suffer some degree of sexual dysfunction such as pain with intercourse, low libido, or problems with arousal or orgasm. During perimenopause and menopause, due to the drop in levels of estrogen and testosterone, many changes in our sexual function may arise, such as vaginal dryness, pain with intercourse, and decreased desire (libido). 64% of menopausal patients report painful intercourse, according to the North American Menopause Society. Because the cause(s) of sexual dysfunction can be multifactorial, it is important for patients to work with their women’s healthcare provider to isolate the source of the problem and identify effective treatment options. There are many successful treatment options for sexual dysfunction, such as pelvic physical therapy, vaginal estrogen therapy, hormone replacement, MonaLisa Touch Laser therapy, and many more, so there is no reason to suffer in silence. We are here to help.
